CPD Code : Formal Events
Speaker : Dr. Sun, Guibo
Assistant Professor, Department of Urban Planning and Design,
The University of Hong Kong

Dr. Sun an Assistant Professor within the Department of Urban Planning and Design at The University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on urban analytics and interventions study. Using rigorous research design such as natural experiments, he is interested in collecting practice-based evidence of the social and health impacts imposed by urban planning and design. He is the winner of two international research awards: Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Early Career Academic Award, and RTPI Commendation Award for Research Excellence, both in 2019, commending his work for mapping the three-dimensional pedestrian network of Hong Kong.

Details :

The seminar presents how a three-dimensional pedestrian network reshapes connectivity and helps to integrate the built environment of high-density Hong Kong. First, I deliberate how a continuous three-dimensional network constitutes an entirely different urban morphological spatial hierarchy. Second, I present a three-dimensional pedestrian network model and use GIS to map it to the Hong Kong territory, and show that the network makes a striking difference in walkability evaluation compared to road network. Thus, for active travel optimisation planning, especially in high-density cities, a bespoke three-dimensional pedestrian network should replace road network.
